The wild shootout at a Bronx subway station that left one bystander dead and five others wounded stemmed from a clash between rival gangs, police said Tuesday — as the cops released photos of two suspected gunmen who are still on the loose.
The surveillance photos show one suspected gangbanger in a ski mask fleeing the scene wearing a black jacket, a black hooded sweatshirt, and white and red Air Jordan sneakers.
The second suspect is wearing a black Northface jacket, a gray hooded sweatshirt, a black ski mask pulled up over his mouth, dark pants, and black and yellow Air Jordan sneakers, police said.
“This was a random shooting that occurred on a number 4 train between two rival groups,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters during a briefing on the Monday afternoon shooting.
“Once the groups come together on the train, there’s a verbal dispute that quickly leads to a physical fight,” Kenny said. “As the train is pulling into the station at Mount Eden, one round is fired inside the train car.
“If you can imagine a chaotic scene,” he said. “You have a crowded train pulling into a crowded platform, one shot being fired. Now everybody is trying to scramble to get off the platform.”
Kenny said cops have so far found 19 discharged 9 mm shell casings from the shooting, which spilled off the subway platform and out onto the street shortly before 4:40 p.m.
Police now believe there were three shooters — the two being sought and a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the leg and ear during the gun-toting melee and is now being eyed as a possible third gunman, sources said.
The suspected teen is also being investigated in a separate shooting in the Bronx last month, law enforcement sources said.
One slug in Monday’s shootings struck a 35-year-old innocent bystander in the chest, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Kenny said.
In addition to the suspected gunman, also wounded were a 14-year-old girl, a 29-year-old woman, and two men, ages 71 and 28, who were listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening wounds at area hospitals.
One of the victims left the scene and later walked into Bronx Care.
After the shooting the suspects fled the scene on foot heading northbound on Jerome Avenue toward Featherbed Lane, police said.
“We will solve this crime and we will bring the people responsible to justice,” Mayor Eric Adams told reporters on Tuesday.
Investigators are asking anyone with information on the shooting or the suspects to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline.
